2019 ABAI Presentation: “Decreasing Non-Contextual Vocalizations in a Child with ASD Using Differential Reinforcement Procedures”

by | May 28, 2019 | News & Information

Vocal stereotypy has been reported to occur in an average of 54% of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis (Chebli et al., 2016). This behavior can take many forms such as repetitive vocalizations, sounds, noises, babbles, or singing that are not directly related to the current context or activity, interfere with functional communication, and hinder opportunities for social engagement (Ahearn et al., 2007). Previous research has examined the use of various interventions for motor and vocal stereotypy such as differential reinforcement, self-monitoring, and response cost (Mulligan et al., 2014). The current study examined the use of a differential consequence procedure to reduce non-contextual vocalizations in a six-year-old boy with ASD.
